YouTube puts play button in main logo

YouTube has gone through many design changes in its twelve year history, including tweaks to its logo, changes to the play button icon and even an official font revealed this spring. But the core logo has remained unchanged. Until today. Kinda.

After several years using the wordmark with "Tube" enclosed by red screen interchangeably with the play button icon, YouTube has unified its brand identity. The play button will apparently always be present in the logo on all screen sizes, flanked by the wordmark when there's space or need. At the same time they've changed the logo colour from a specific hue (Hex #CD201F) to a pure screen red.

The new logo launches as part of an overall refresh of the service, aimed a cleaning up the user experience.

The bright red cherry on top of this update sundae is a refreshed YouTube Logo and YouTube Icon. Designed for our multi-screen world, the updated Logo combines a cleaned up version of the YouTube wordmark and Icon, creating a more flexible design that works better across a variety of devices, even on the tiniest screens. Why’s it more flexible? When room is limited (say on a smartphone) you can use the brightened up Icon as an abbreviated Logo, which will be seen more easily and read more clearly. You’ll see the new Logo and Icon roll out across mobile and desktop today, and across all our other apps and services soon. - Official YouTube blog
